Watching Molecular Excitons Move

Organic electronic devices are based on organic semiconductors, which combine attractive properties of organic materials with semiconducting behavior. The elementary excitation in these materials is a so-called “Frenkel exciton” — a strongly bound pair of negative (electron) and positive (hole) charges. As a result, organic electronics essentially rely on exciton diffusive dynamics that have to be controlled and observed to ensure the development of high-efficient organic devices.
Here we present how the state-of-the-art technological developments in thin film deposition, ultrafast spectroscopy, and computer modelling come together to reveal the exciton diffusion process in a widely used organic material, C70 fullerene. We demonstrate and explain the physics of a new technique for watching exciton diffusion unfold in real time using photoinduced absorption signals as probes. We demonstrate an unusually high diffusion coefficient in C70 films which is ascribed to extremely low energetic disorder due to vacuum deposition. The novel technique is deemed to pave the way to further development of efficient optoelectronic devices such as organic thin-film transistors and organic solar cells.
