Solid state spectroscopy department

The Solid State Spectroscopy Department was organized in 1985 году (head Prof. G.N. Zhizhin) by merging of three laboratories and a section, the Laboratory of Crystal Spectroscopy (created in 1969, head Prof. G.N. Zhizhin), the Laboratory of Molecular Spectroscopy (established in 1969, head Dr. Kh. E. Sterin. In 1987 it was transformed into the Laboratory of Vibrational Spectroscopy of Condensed Matter, head Prof. B.N. Mavrin), and the Laboratory of Disordered Structures’ Spectroscopy (set up in 1984, head Prof. E.A. Vinogradov) and the Section of High-Resolution Fourier Spectroscopy (organized in 1982, head Prof. E.A. Vinogradov, then, Dr. M.N. Popova).
From its very beginning, the Department developed the methods of infrared (IR), far infrared (FIR), Raman, high-resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy, spectroscopy of thin and ultrathin films, of surface modes in bulk samples and of molecular assemblies on the surface. Much attention was given to the design of new spectral equipment for a broad spectral region (1 – 500 mkm), with high resolution (up to 0.001 cm-1), good photometric accuracy (0.3 %), record high sensitivity in registering spectra of mono- and submonolayer films of organic and nonorganic substances on the surface of metals and dielectrics.
Important results were obtained in vibrational spectroscopy of crystals, amorphous materials, new carbon materials, liquids, porous semiconductors, films, nanostructures, using IR, FIR, Raman, and hyper-Raman techniques, low temperatures and high pressures, as well as in spectroscopy of transition metal ions in crystals, using high-resolution Fourier spectroscopy.
